The Lyric Theatre & The Arts Council of Martin County Presents

The Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance”

Mandala Sand Painting: February 8-12: Court House Cultural Center Gallery, 80 SE Ocean Blvd, Stuart, FL 34994

In the Mystical Arts of Tibet, multiphonic singers from Tibet's famous Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform sacred temple music and enchanting masked dances as part of their multi-national tour for World Healing. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and critically acclaimed for their sold out performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Mystical Arts of Tibet singers perform a rare style of vocals in which the monks intone three notes of one chord simultaneously.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet is co-produced by Richard Gere Productions and the Drepung Loseling Institue, which is the North American seat of the Drepung Loseling Monastery. The talented vocalists have performed all over the world, including appearing with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Patti Smith, and the Beastie Boys among others. Two of the monks' recordings have reached the top 10 spot on the New Age charts, and their most recent recording combined the Gethsemani Schola's Gregorian chant singing with the Tibetan multiphonic singing. The Drepung Loseling monks have also been featured on the Golden Globe-nominated sountrack for the film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt, and have performed with Philip Glass at Lincoln Center during Glass' presentation of his award-winning score for Martin Scorcese's film Kundun.

Accompanying the Mystical Arts of Tibet's multiphonic singing are elaborate traditional costumes and associated masked dances, including the Dance of the Sacred Snow Lion. An intensely unique and powerful performance, the Mystical Arts of Tibet's performance has three purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India. Celebrate the beautiful tradition of Tibetan multiphonic singing and dance this season at The Lyric Theatre with the Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance.”

Mandala Sand Painting
February 8-12
Court House Cultural Center Gallery, 80 SE Ocean Blvd, Stuart, FL 34994

The community is invited to observe The Tibetan Buddhist lamas as they construct a mandala sand painting as part of their week-long stay in Stuart. The week begins on February 8th with the opening ceremonies for the creation of a mandala sand painting which will be an on-going process during the 5 day period at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery in Stuart. The public is invited to watch as the lamas painstakingly create the mandala of colored sand, used as a tool for re-consecrating the earth and its inhabitants. From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, that of painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan, this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means “mandala of colored powders.” Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days. The sand mandala will be deconstructed during the closing ceremony held on February 12th, when half the sand will be distributed to the audience, while the remainder is carried to a nearby body of water. The waters then carry the healing blessing of the deposited sand to the ocean, and from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.
